Pupil Appraisal » The Evaluation Process

The Evaluation Process

Evaluations can be conducted only with parent permission and only after Tier I- III interventions have been implemented and were unsuccessful in improving student performance/behavior to an acceptable level. Only students suspected of low incidence exceptionalities may be evaluated without Tier I-III intervention data (i.e. severe medical issues; Deafness; Blindness; Traumatic Brain Injury; behavioral concerns that are a threat to the child or others; etc.). In order for a student to receive an evaluation, the SBLC process must be followed.  SBLC meetings are held once per month. Please contact the School Building Level Committee at your child's school for additional information about the SBLC process.

The Evaluation Process

Once written parental permission is received, the evaluation will begin and must be completed within sixty (60) business days.  The parent may withdraw permission for the evaluation at any point during the process with a written request. Qualified professionals such as Educational Diagnostician, School Psychologist, Speech and Language Diagnostician, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Adapted Physical Education Teacher, and Physical Therapist may be involved in the evaluation.  The following may occur during the evaluation:

  • Vision and Hearing Screening
  • Review and analysis of all screening information
  • Interviews with the student, the family, and teachers
  • Observations of the student during daily activities
  • Curriculum-based assessment
  • Behavior or instructional interventions
  • Appropriate tests of general knowledge and/or academic achievement
  • Speech and Language Assessment
  • Functional Behavioral Assessment
  • Medical Assessment
  • Motor Assessment
  • Other assessments, if needed during the course of the evaluation

Upon completion of the evaluation, the parent will be invited to a meeting to discuss the findings and determine if their child has an exceptionality.
