EMPLOYEE TOBACCO USE AND SMOKING

 

 

In the best educational, health, and social interests of everyone, and in view of medical evidence reiterating the dangers of tobacco use, Plaquemines Parish School Board prohibits smoking and/or the use of any other tobacco products as well as non-tobacco smoking substances and smoking instruments (such as, but not limited to: (all forms of smokeless tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes) on any Plaquemines Parish School Board property, i.e., buildings, offices, grounds (outdoors and off-campus school activities), school buses/other Board vehicles, and in private cars while parked on school property.  School Board property also encompasses those sites and buildings leased from other sources and/or subject to the jurisdiction of the School Board.

 

Tobacco use includes smoking, chewing, dipping, or any other use of tobacco products.  Smoking refers to inhaling, exhaling, burning or carrying of any lighted or heated tobacco product, as well as non-tobacco smoking substances and smoking instruments (e.g. electronic cigarettes).

 

In compliance with statutory provisions, the School Board shall enforce and monitor the effects of this policy.  An individual shall face disciplinary measures if caught using tobacco products, including smoking, and may be cited and fined by local law enforcement.

 

It shall be the duty of the principalto enforce this policy at any school.  Violators shall be subject to the following disciplinary measures:

 

  1. First Offense:  A verbal warning with a letter of reprimand from the employee’s principal or immediate supervisor, which shall be placed in the employee’s file.  A copy of the reprimand shall be forwarded to the Superintendent’s office.

  2. Second Offense:  A conference with the Director of Human Resources with a letter of reprimand, which shall be placed in the employee’s file.  A copy of the reprimand shall be forwarded to the Superintendent’s office.

  3. Subsequent Offenses:  The employee shall be referred to the Sheriff’s Department for citations and fines.
