SCHOOL BUS CONDUCT

The Plaquemines Parish School Board directs the principal/ designee to assume full responsibility for discipline of pupils riding buses.  It is the duty of the driver, in case of any infraction of rules by any student, to notify the principal/designee of the school the student attends.  If possible, this must be done by a written referral.  It is the responsibility of the principal/designee to determine necessary punishment to students violating regulations.

The principal/designee may suspend bus privileges, if necessary.  Any parent of a pupil suspended from riding a school bus shall have the right to appeal to the Superintendent or designee, who shall conduct a hearing on the merits of the bus suspension.

A pupil damaging a school bus shall be subject to suspension from school.  Any pupil suspended for damages to any school bus shall be required to make restitution for such damages and may not be readmitted to school until restitution has been made.

At no time shall the bus operator assume authority for suspending bus privileges.  Smoking on school buses by students or operators shall not be permitted.  Cell phone use on school buses by students or operators shall not be permitted.  Students shall be notified of all bus regulations.

DISCIPLINARY REGULATIONS

All students who utilize the Plaquemines Parish school buses for transportation to and from school will at all times follow the rules and regulations for riding the school buses and the rules of conduct for the school, if applicable.  If a student is not abiding by these rules and regulations and the misconduct is severe enough to warrant a written referral, then the following procedures will be adhered to:

1st Warning:

Verbal reprimand or discussion of behavior with rider

2nd Warning:

Phone call to parent(s) to discuss behavior issues on bus

*From this point on, a bus referral shall be notifying the principal/ designee of the rules violation(s).  The severity of the consequence will be determined by school policy regarding bus rules.  The severity of the consequence should match the offense.

**If the offense is severe enough, a hearing will be called with the Superintendent/designee to determine the consequence.

To help determine the severity of offenses, there are two (2) categories, using Rules for Bus Riders, #8 and #9, in the Transportation Handbook:

Category I:

Offenses of a lesser nature would be taken care of from a discipline standpoint in accordance with transportation procedures.

Category II:

Offenses of a severe nature would be taken care of in accordance with school discipline policies and offenders would be subject to suspension from school.
