Phoenix High School Spartan Basketball Team Advances to State Quarterfinals


   

      The boys won their first playoff game against Jehovah-Jireh with a score of 100 Phoenix to 62 Jehovah-Jireh on February 22nd to advance into the 2nd round of the playoffs.

      On Wednesday, February 26, 2008, the Phoenix High School Spartans played in their second playoff game on the road to the Class C Championship game. They won the game with a score of 65 Phoenix to 55 Summerfield. The Spartans defeated Summerfield which was a higher ranked team. At one point, the team was down by ten points, but thanks to a dunk done by Donald Taylor the game momentum transferred to Phoenix. Donald Taylor was selected to be part of the State All Star High School team played at the end of the season. Gary Sylvester was the game’s leading scorer and all the boys made several free throw shots.

     The team is looking forward to the Quarterfinal game which will be played on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 7 p.m. in Atlanta, LA. Atlanta High School is about 35 miles outside of Natchitoches, LA. The Spartans will have a tough fight on Friday in order to beat the number one ranked Atlanta team. After a full season of practice, dedication, commitment, and hard work the Spartan know they have the heart and skills to defeat Atlanta and move into the Final Four Semifinals.

     The Phoenix High School Varsity Basketball Team is made up of Marlon Jiles (captain), Marcus Cross (captain), Justin Manual, Allen Lewis, Theron Tinson, Gary Sylvester, Donald Taylor, Clarence Harvey, Justin Reddick, Denzel Tarrence, Brian Etienne, and Tevin Barthelemy. The team is coached by Ulysses Griffin along with Brian Etienne and Michael Jiles. Managers of the team are Wade Tarrence and Ellis Harvey. The scorekeeper is Shaquille Cosse.
