American Legion Oratorical Contest Held

Charlie Newberry

Charlie Newberry of Belle Chasse High placed first in the local American Legion Oratorical Contest, held January 9, 2007.  Courtney Barthelemy from South Plaquemines High placed second in the tough competition.

Contestants from the parish’s high schools competed in an eight to ten minute speech about some aspect of our constitution.

Contestants prepared far ahead for the competition which included, in addition to the eight to ten minute prepared oration, a three to five minute impromptu speech on one of the articles or amendments to the constitution.  The purpose of the prestigious American Legion Oratorical Contest is to instill in students a reverence and respect for our country’s foundational document.  Dan Leonard represented American Legion at the contest, and Lorenda Lawrence represented the American Legion Auxiliary as a judge.

Contestants from Plaquemines middle schools were assigned a three to five minute prepared oration on any aspect of the constitution concerning the rights and responsibilities of citizens.  Kayla Poyadou placed first in the middle school competition.

Coaching their students were Elaine Cox of South Plaquemines and Bonnie Galloway of Belle Chasse.

Charlie will compete in February at the regional level.
