BCHS Band Ends Mardi Gras Season on a High Note
Approximately 32 miles of parading in five different parades ended with a bang on Monday night in Orpheus. Belle Chasse High School band finished up its parading season with a march through the Morial Convention Center and a peek at the Orpheuscapade.
The BCHS band started its season with Cleopatra on Friday, February 9th, and the following Sunday with Alla. In Alla, the band received a trophy of Excellence for their participation that day. Over the Mardi Gras weekend, the band marched it’s first ever Endymion, Saturday, February 17th, which showed to be a learning experience for all band members and chaperones. The students did a great job and arrived back at the band hall late that night. The band had to make a quick turn around for the next day. On Sunday, they were required to be at the band room early to march in the Thoth parade. The Thoth route went by Children’s Hospital and many retirement facilities. The band performed well and received many positive comments along the parade route.
The band marched the next day, Monday February 19th, in Orpheus. The students were surprised when they were led into the Morial Convention Center to parade before the guest of the Orpheuscapade. The chaperones were quickly shuffled away from the band along with the band director, Jeff Walker.
The students were left on their own to perform for the many guests as they marched around a route marked with barriers and tables with fancy decorations. With Orpheus floats in front of them and behind them the students of Belle Chasse High School band and the Cheerleading squad were led by the Cardinal mascot through what was a very mesmerizing yet exciting end to a successful productive Mardi Gras Parade season.
The Belle Chasse High School band would like to thank the Dance team for marching in Cleopatra, Alla, and Endymion and they would also like to thank the Cheerleaders for marching in Cleopatra, Alla, Thoth and Orpheus. A special thanks goes out to Terri Buras, our lovable mascot, for marching in Alla, Endymion, and Orpheus. Many parade goers adored our Cardinal and she entertained thousands of people from ages 2 through 88. A debt of gratitude also goes out to all band members who participated and practiced many long hours to prepare for the parades. We would also like to thank those band members who marched all 5 parades. That was a great undertaking and a huge physical job. Mr. Jeff Walker also did an outstanding job pulling the band together and getting them ready for this season. The band will now start preparing for their concert season.
