What is a School Psychologist?

School psychologists provide consultative services to faculty and staff targeting academic and behavior prevention and intervention services. We are also available to consult on school-wide needs. Additionally, we provide direct services such as evaluations, small-group and class-wide social skills instruction, individual counseling, and parent consultation to address the needs of students with and without disabilities. We are available to do large and small-group professional development, training, or job-embedded consultation on a variety of topics relevant to students' academic and behavioral progress.

We practice as school psychologists in an attempt to become the best in our field. Utilizing best evidence-based practices in our field and collaborating with each other, we strive to serve the students, faculty, staff and parents of Plaquemines Parish Schools by researching and practicing ethically and responsibly.

The school psychologists of Plaquemines Parish Schools maintain their own School Psychology website. Included in the School Psychology page are resources for community leaders, parents, teachers, and students.

Overview of Services

Psychological services are provided by school psychologists and are defined by LA Bulletin 1508. These services may include conducting and interpreting assessments that are cognitive, academic or behavioral in nature, consulting with other professionals about programming and evaluation, and providing direct psychological services for students in the forms of counseling, intervention planning and monitoring, substance abuse prevention, crisis prevention and intervention, parent training, and coordinating services with community agencies. Not all students are eligible for direct school psychological services. An evaluation of needs may be conducted to determine eligibility. Our school psychologists are often on teams with Pupil Appraisal.
